Since 1964, Galerie Michael Werner has worked with a core group of important artists of the twentieth century, including Georg Baselitz, Marcel Broodthaers, James Lee Byars, Jörg Immendorff, Per Kirkeby, Markus Lüpertz, A.R. Penck and Sigmar Polke. In addition to German and international contemporary art, the gallery shows works by modern masters, including Otto Freundlich, Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Henri Michaux and Francis Picabia. After five years in Berlin, Michael Werner moved his gallery to Cologne in 1969. In 1990 the gallery in New York was established and in 2008 a space in Berlin was opened again. One year later, Galerie Michael Werner moved to its current location in Märkisch Wilmersdorf, just south of Berlin.
