
Michael Werner Gallery opened in New York in 1990 with an exhibition of Hero Paintings by Georg Baselitz. The gallery currently occupies the historic East 77 Street townhouse where legendary dealer Leo Castelli once kept his gallery. Michael Werner Gallery presents modern and contemporary European and American art. Recent exhibitions include James Lee Byars: The Rest is Silence, Décor: A Conquest by Marcel Broodthaers, Polke - Bernstein - Amber and major surveys of important drawings by Francis Picabia, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Peter Doig.

In 1963, Michael Werner opened his first gallery in Berlin with the premiere exhibition of Georg Baselitz. Galerie Michael Werner was later established in Köln in 1969. For over forty years Galerie Michael Werner has represented a core group of important European artists, including Baselitz, Marcel Broodthaers, Jörg Immendorff, Per Kirkeby, Markus Lüpertz, A.R. Penck and Sigmar Polke, among others, as well as the American artists James Lee Byars and Don Van Vliet. In addition, the gallery presents important works by modern masters Hans Arp, Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Piero Manzoni, Francis Picabia and Kurt Schwitters.
